As with any series this complex, the first episode has to do a lot of narrative heavy lifting, and we will have to wait for the real climaxes. Plenty of characters didn't even get a look-in. There was no Jaime Lannister, or Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) or Brienne of Tarth (wonderful Gwendoline Christie). But there were plenty enough mini-highlights here to whet the appetite. We can now add terrifying giants to the dragons in the series' catalogue of beasties, and the writing - as shown by a delicious exchange between Tywin and Tyrion - still packs enough wallop to make you forget you are watching fantasy.
