Now in its fourth year, Bands for Boobs has come a long way in raising funds for Woodland's "Team Cupcakes for the Cure," which participates annually in the Sacramento Valley Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.
This year, the event takes place at Cal Expo Saturday, May 11.
Siblings Jennifer Haynes, Danielle Caster and Randall Haynes spearheaded the free, all-ages concert and raffle in 2010 in an effort to raise money for the Team Cupcakes. Last year they earned third place fundraising team in the Community Category.
While the family has not experienced
breast cancer first-hand, they feel it's important to help in finding a cure."(Breast cancer) affects everybody. It could affect us," said Jennifer Haynes. "(Bands) is just a fun thing we started doing to raise money and now we're out of hand with it."
The initial bulge of $7,500 raised this year came from the Team Cupcakes Pin-Up contest, held in February at the Burger Saloon in downtown Woodland.
Thirty-four women modeled at the event, which were then posted online, letting viewers choose the winner by donating money for a particular person. The woman with the most donations in crowned Miss Bands for Boobs.
The honor this year went to breast cancer survivor Michele Madrigal, 38, of Redding. Madrigal was diagnosed in
October 2011 and is now cancer free."It was so much fun," Madrigal said of her Pin Up contest experience. "It was a huge step outside my box."
Madrigal may have been identified as Model No. 2 in the contest, but voters clearly found her to be No. 1 in their eyes.
The mother of two boys had a double mastectomy and is awaiting reconstructive surgery.
"This whole Team Cupcakes has been a really big support for me," she said. "They've always been behind me the whole time. They're one of the biggest blessings I've been blessed with in the last few years since I started my fight."
Saturday's concert was held at Brown's Corner, 392 W. Main St., and featured six local bands: Four Barrel, Mason Rex, Dry County Drinkers, Tha Dirt Feelin, Oh The Trio and Adhara.
Josh Hilliard and Brent Randolph of Firehouse Entertainment emceed the event.
The Sacramento Valley Affiliate of Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure has awarded more than $15 million to local organizations, according to Haynes. Of every dollar raised, 75 cents stays in the 19 counties served by the Sacramento Valley Affiliate.
The rest goes towards national breast cancer research. Because of some of the cancer research programs that exist here through the research programs like those at UC Davis, much of that funding also stays local," she said.
