ROX Gallery's display (Bowery Boogie)
Last night the ROX Gallery in the Lower East Side opened its show, "Who Shot Natalie White," an exhibit that examines the puzzling fascination that male art photographers have with naked person Natalie White. But the show was nearly shut down by the NYPD's 7th Precinct Sybaritic Squad, who visited the gallery after complaints were made about White's nude form appearing in the display facing Delancey Street. Thankfully, cooler heads and warmer loins prevailed: White led the officers on a topless tour of the exhibit and the NYPD left a little more cultured. âIt was like a moment out of âThe Big Lebowski,â â White told the Post, presumably as she examined a bizarre sketch on a sticky note made by Lieutenant Jackie Treehorn.
Who complained about the image of a nude woman masturbating? âThe ones who complain are the old people," ROX Gallery curator Gregory de la Haba says. âOne walked in from the street and said, âTake this pornography down!â I had no reaction. She kept saying âTake it down. Itâs pornography!â â Sounds like someone's still sore about that "lost invitation" to Peter Beard's beach shack.
White's attorney, Al Pacino in that pretty cool, underrated movie Ron Kuby, was skeptical as to why the police showed up at all: âWhy did they feel it was necessary to come inside and meet the naked girl? Maybe they're just being thorough, leaving no stone unturned."
At least they didn't try to fix the cable.
For you amateur investigators out there, here's a video accompanying the exhibit of Natalie White eating a cheeseburger naked, among other things [NSFW unless you work at the NYPD]
